A story from the field: Thailand, and the remarkable work of foster carers and community leaders
10 July 2025

Recently, our team in Thailand stepped out of the office and into the home of one of our remarkable foster families for a day of community training, storytelling, and shared encouragement.

The day began not with statistics or case files, but with stories. Each foster parent was asked: What do you love about being a foster parent?

One mother, Nee, who has fostered eight children with her husband, spoke with emotion:

"No matter where they are, they will always be a part of our family and our hearts."

Even a shared love of spicy food with one of her former foster daughters still evokes tender memories.

"Since she left our family, I almost can’t bring myself to eat spicy food - it just doesn’t taste the same without her."

These stories speak to the deep bonds being formed - not temporary arrangements, but lifelong connections rooted in love, commitment, and healing.

The team then visited a nearby school where three foster children are enrolled. In the school meeting room, we were joined by a remarkable group - teachers, nurses, doctors, community leaders - all united in one purpose: supporting these children to thrive.

Care for Children’s trainers led a workshop on the importance of collaboration in foster care. Foster parents and community members took turns expressing their gratitude - for each other, and for the shared commitment that is changing children’s lives.

"The children we work with have faced immense hardship," one team member reflected. "But here, they’re learning what love looks like - and it’s being modelled every day by families and communities who refuse to give up on them."

"This day wasn’t extraordinary because of what we did - but because of who we were with. Foster parents, social workers, and community members came together not out of duty, but out of love. It’s a beautiful glimpse of what’s possible when a whole community believes every child deserves a family."
