In Phnom Penh, Cambodia, a foster family took in a young boy who was underweight and in poor health. Just days after arriving at his new home, he became seriously ill and needed to be admitted to hospital.
His foster family immediately took responsibility for his care. His foster mother stayed with him throughout his week in hospital, supporting him as he recovered and helping him adjust to an unfamiliar environment.
Even something as simple as sleeping in a hospital bed was difficult for him. He had been used to sleeping on the floor, and the change was unsettling. Rather than forcing him to adapt straight away, his foster family responded with patience and understanding, helping him through the transition at his own pace.
As she cared for him, his foster mother also noticed that his development was delayed. She took the time to understand his individual needs and respond to them with warmth, patience and consistent care.
“It was very difficult for me to see him seriously ill, but I wanted to stay with him and care for him.”

Her commitment has continued beyond those difficult first weeks. Looking to the future, she says that once her son is older, she and her husband would consider opening their home to another child, saying, “I will discuss with my husband the possibility of caring for another child, so that they can grow up and play together.”
“If I had known about the foster care and adoption process earlier, I would have applied sooner. Even though the situation was difficult, I am grateful that I have my child.”

Today, the boy continues to grow and develop. Although he remains smaller than other children his age, he has made progress and is increasingly able to understand and interact with the people around him.
His journey has not been straightforward. But through patience, commitment and a willingness to understand his individual needs, his foster family has given him something fundamental: a safe and loving family environment in which he can grow.
