How a community's commitment to family-based care is transforming children's lives in Thailand
08 October 2024

In the northeastern Thai city of Khon Kaen, a remarkable effort is underway to change the lives of children who are growing up in institutional care. Our government project partners at the local Shelter for Children and Families, along with the Khaen Thong Children's Home, are committed to reducing the number of children living in these institutions and giving them the opportunity to grow up in loving families. Their goal is to recruit families from the local community who can provide the love, care, and stability these children so desperately need.

Unlike general foster care, which provides temporary family life for children, this initiative - based on Care for Children's training - emphasizes permanence through secure, long-term placements. This approach is similar to adoption in providing stability but includes ongoing support for families and monitoring by governments to ensure the children's well-being and the quality of care.

Earlier this year, the Shelter for Children and Families reached out to both experienced foster parents and new families who might be open to fostering. The response was overwhelming. By the time the recruitment effort concluded, twelve families were approved to start their journey as foster parents.

In August, the Care for Children team travelled to Khon Kaen to support these newly registered families. The team spent a day preparing them for the rewarding, yet challenging, road ahead. Using training materials developed by both Care for Children and the Department of Children and Youth, the session covered key topics such as the role of foster parents and understanding why children need the care of a family.

The 28 participants were divided into five discussion groups, giving them a chance to share their thoughts and learn from one another. These conversations were so meaningful, allowing these families to delve into how they could best meet the needs of the children they would soon welcome into their homes.

The training also explored the specific challenges these families might face, from understanding the emotional needs of the children to the impacts of previous trauma. Through the sessions, the families discussed their motivations, expectations, and the incredible potential of what it means to be a foster parent. Building this sense of community amongst foster carers is so important. Ensuring they don't feel isolated in their journey can be so helpful, especially when they encounter challenges.

For everyone involved, the day was a reminder of the power of community and the belief that every child deserves a family. Thanks to the commitment of these 12 families, and three more from nearby Kalasin Province, the children of Khon Kaen are one step closer to finding the love and stability they need to thrive. This collaborative effort in Khon Kaen pushes us forward in our shared mission to see children placed in loving, supportive homes, and we look forward to continuing this life-changing work. Together, we are bringing families together - and giving children a chance of a brighter future.
